Team SCS is actually one of my own projects that I put together, with the help of a couple buddies I’ve been racing religiously with for the last 10 months or so. Basically we’re a bunch of road racing junkies with limited budgets on a mission to somehow subsidize our adventures with someone else’s money.

Well, that was the plan anyway, at first. And then the online marketer part of my brain kicked into full boost and all these affiliate ideas started buzzing around my hairless head. Next thing you know, we’re not only selling racing parts; we’re an authorized seller for the DC Shoes Auto Collection.

You think that’s hot right? We already got another deal in the works with Mothers Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners. We’ll be selling their product from our online store and I’ll be doing a number of how to clean your ride tutorials to demonstrate how well the products we sell actually work.

I think the key to selling online is proving your product; once you do that, it sells itself. Alright, so we’ve got e-commerce down, that’s one tried and true revenue model that’s definitely going to bring in some funds. Affiliate marketing is up next, although I’m not going to show all our cards just yet.

In about 6 month’s time, I’ll do a case study on the site to measure our successes and failures, and perhaps share some of my secrets that you can take to your online business and profit from as well. Here’s a few big hints though; get analytics and start logging your traffic data to figure out what’s working.

Right now I can say that we’re getting more traffic on Team SCS than some of my other clients with PageRank as high as 5. Actually in terms of traffic alone, we’re competitive with companies that have been around for years. I’m very confident that our efforts will pay off tenfold when it really heats up.

This for fun turned serious venture has taught me something very important though; money can’t buy what’s taken quite possibly years of experiences to develop. When someone provides a service, you don’t pay for the hour of time; you’re paying for what’s done in that hour that you can’t do yourself.

For example, Team SCS wouldn’t be possible without Ferdie Ang, my partner in shenanigans. The deals he’s put together for the team, not many people out there could’ve done; certainly I couldn’t have done. I make the wheels turn with the web but he’s pouring the race gas. Keep it in mind for your own businesses.

Mediapainter was officially launched in the summer of 2006, only a few months after I’d graduated from University of California, Irvine. I’d just finished a week-long trip to Whistler, BC, Canada for epic snowboarding with the Camp of Champions, followed up by a month of surfing almost every day. I figured if I was to continue to enjoy even a shred of semblance to the lifestyle I was currently enjoying, I ought to get moving and figure out how to earn a respectable income.

For years I never even bothered having a website of my own; I’d just show potential clients the websites I’d done in the past, and that usually was good enough to get the ball rolling. Feeling like I needed to do something bigger, I did everything and anything that was trendy and all the rage. Naturally that means I started blogging, and my website was animated in Flash, regrettably. Don’t get me wrong, Flash has its time and place, but if you’ve ever visited a Flash website more than once or twice, it gets old fast.

After a while I got sick of looking at my own portfolio website. That happens to me a lot though; I always want something more, something better. It’s that obsessive compulsive side of my personality that drives me wild but at the same time evolves my skill set because I have no choice. My biggest pet peeve was that my search engine traffic was garbage; I wasn’t ranking for any keywords really, and that’s a result of developing an entire website completely in Flash which search engines cannot index.

At least they couldn’t back then; Adobe released some neat technology to Google in 2008 that would allow Flash files to be opened up and indexed by search engines. Although, I’ve yet to test if there’s any disadvantages, perhaps content being indexed slower than say, a dynamic driven WordPress site that’s pinging search engines every post. Word is that these Flash sites won’t be appearing at the top of many search results anytime soon!

Fast forward to 2009 and I’m on a mission to rank well in search engines, mostly Google. I’ve set reasonable expectations: PageRank 4 and would like to be in the top 10 organic results for the keyword phrase “Orange County Web Design.” To accomplish my goals, I’ve employed WordPress to power my website as a content management system and I’m unleashing my online marketing fists of fury to get those rankings up there. I’ll be documenting the journey, both successes and failures.

So far I’m at PageRank 2 and still have a while to go before I start killing it in the organic search engine results pages. For fun I’m going to launch a couple PPC campaigns in AdWords to see what kind of damage I can do; I’m also very curious to see what kind of action they’ve got going on with Facebook ads. In my line of work, you’ve got to be the cowboy and can’t wait for someone to tell you its all clear to move forward. If you wait around, it’ll be too late; the opportunity will have passed. Wish me luck!

Even in instances where a content management system is developed, training is still required, regardless of how intuitive it might be to use. With that said, we set two goals that were reasonable given the parameters set forth.

First, we wanted to showcase a good amount of product and second, by doing so we wanted to generate leads as a result. Using the infamous query light box plug-in, I created several product galleries for their scarves, knit socks, knit hats, hats and bags.

The website would mirror their print catalogs, the key difference being that a website is a much better lead generation tool. To ensure maximum exposure, I also search engine optimized the site based on a list of keywords derived from my keyword research.

I designed and developed AnyData’s website while I was employed with one of their subsidiaries, AnyTrack. Not too much time was allotted to get the website up and running so I didn’t bother to install a content management system (CMS).

The website was coded using XHTML, a stricter/cleaner version of HTML, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). I also used PHP to make updating more efficient, seeing as how I would be responsible for maintenance (might as well make my life a little easier).

Being short for time, I wasn’t able to properly search engine optimize (SEO) their website, but having such an old domain name helped them out (age counts in the search engine rankings). Besides, the website I was replacing was as old as the domain; it was terrible.

Their domain name was maybe 5 or 6 years old at the time (2007) I redesigned everything and believe me, their branding desperately needed the work. So while I was giving them this new look, I did their business cards and product brochures too.

There were a lot of product brochures; I figure I’ll just show the best looking one. All the others they had me make the same and were kind of plain looking if you asked me. By the time I finished everything, their website had a Page Rank of 5.

SLVDR is a casual lifestyle apparel brand born in Southern California, inspired by snowboarding and surfing culture. It’s a newer company that basically had a bunch of images for a website, completely depleted of keywords and not ranking at all in search engines.

It didn’t have any analytics setup either, so I can’t say with certainty how much an impact my changes have made. But before I started working on it, the site hadn’t really been indexed in the search engine results pages and now after only a month (as of July 2009); it’s already sitting at Page Rank 2.

The initial push I think is really important to getting traction and building momentum. If you don’t build your site properly from the start, you’re throwing away a lot of what could’ve been. If only they’d used keywords that would’ve been indexed instead of images; they’d be doing a lot better.

Search engine optimization (SEO) originally wasn’t what SLVDR hired me to do; they were just looking for a website that got the job done and updated easy. That’s why the design is kind of simple. I made their website as straightforward as can be to maintain without requiring any HTML.

To make that possible, I developed their website using WordPress as the content management system (CMS). I just figured if we’re designing and developing a new website from ground up anyway, I might as well build a solid foundation for the company’s future online.

Besides, no matter how good a website may look or feel, it doesn’t do you any good without the traffic to convert and that’s why I look to SEO first in determining how I’m going to design and eventually develop the website. A little planning will go a long way in getting a return on your investment.

When she sought a higher paying position, I designed and developed a website for her that would showcase her talents and distinguish her from the other candidates in her interviews. Apparently it worked out pretty well; a director at St. John as well as others complimented her on her website.

For the purpose in mind, we didn’t need to build a high budget production; really a couple HTML pages with an emphasis on design was sufficient to achieve the goals set forth. After she landed her new job, I’d probably never update the site, until it came time for the next job.

In the end, she landed a gig at Van’s as a product developer and a year later moved onto working at The Program, an umbrella of companies owned by the snowboarding mega titan, Burton Snowboards. Her latest venture, AYG Consulting, demands my attention as well. You’ll be seeing it very soon.

David Mecey began his career working for Playboy magazine in the fall of 1979, where soon after, becoming a staff photographer, moved to Chicago. In 1987, he would take a title change to Contributing Photographer, where he would continue with Playboy until 2002.

I met David at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada for a high performance driving event organized by Driving Concepts. He was one of the instructors in the program and a few months after, I redesigned his online portfolio.

By then I was getting pretty tired of using the same jQuery light box plug-in that everyone else caught onto, so I used something a little different to create an improved photo gallery system. I still used jQuery to achieve the results desired, but there were a few significant usability upgrades.

With the old light box plug-in, users couldn’t provide friends with permalinks to specific photos, making the content more difficult to spread around. You also weren’t able to quickly skip a couple photos ahead of the order in the set, having to close the box and then select another photo.

The solution I used solved all these issues, providing a much friendlier user experience, without having to sacrifice any of the effects the light box plug-in had. Thumbnails fade in and out and the current photo being displayed has its thumbnail highlighted as an indicator.

The website is search engine friendly with a PageRank (PR) of 4 and draws in a consistent amount of traffic. I’ve setup Google Analytics which emails David with traffic reports in PDF format on a daily basis while giving me a complete overview of the traffic and what keywords are performing best.

Wheel Power in Huntington Beach, California is one of North America’s largest distributors of aftermarket wheels for the European tuning market. Usually when it comes to the European car crowd, “tuning” means body kits, wheels, and coilover suspensions that slam the car to the floor.

They carry all the popular brands: AC Schnitzer, Brabus, Carlsson, Hartge, Hamann, MKB, Novitec Rosso, RDSport, Rinspeed, Sportec, Techart, Wald, you get the idea. It’s all high end and pricey enough. I remember these guys pushing Hamann pretty hard when I was in high school back in 1999. It’s pretty cool that almost a decade later we’re working together.

Wheel Power approached me to design and develop a one off MySpace profile to support their social media campaign. My idea was to essentially design a page that would funnel traffic outside of MySpace and into landing pages on their website, allowing them to better target and track their traffic.

MySpace pages are great for what they are but have no support for tracking goal conversions. They were never designed for any other purpose aside from sharing personal information with friends and socializing. But if you’re able to take the traffic to one of your own pages, it’s easy to setup Google Analytics and do something with it.

Well, after building this profile for Wheel Power, I honestly doubt I’ll do one of these again unless there’s something really motivating behind it. Maybe things have changed since early 2008, but at the time, MySpace made it very difficult and inefficient to do anything with the frontend.

Lots of the profile had to be hard coded so I used images to replace a lot of the text that was dynamic. I know there are ways to make it work with the backend, but in terms of how much return you might get out of one of these pages relative to how much you’d spend to develop it, I honestly didn’t see it being worthwhile.
